Wolverhampton UK born David Newton was the guitarist and songwriter behind C86 popsters & NME front-cover stars turned US alternative/college radio chart-toppers The Mighty Lemon Drops. David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels continues on from the earlier elements of The Mighty Lemon Drops sound, with a modern contemporary take on the melodic uplifting side of the 80’s post-punk sound. “A gateway to a lifetime of disappointment” is his debut solo album.
The album contains 10 tracks with each their own origin story. “Love And War,” the first track on the album, started with a dream and the Pet Shop Boys:
“I’m not normally a hippy/spiritual type, more of a punk rocker haha, but I had a dream a few years ago that I bought the new single by Pet Shop Boys, one of my long time favorite bands btw, and it was called “In Love And War”. Crazy thing is I actually woke up with the song and melody in my head so on an impulse I grabbed my phone and sang it into there. I played it back a few days later and realized that it wasn’t actually that bad so I went into my studio and recorded what became “In Love And War” (by me, not Pet Shop Boys). In fact, there is actually a reference at the end of the second verse: ‘Neil & Chris, now take your cue, what would you do if this happened to you.’” (Full article at Earbuddy here)
